BirchLieutenantHe was killed in action at Reit Vlei, July 16th, 1900.  This officer resisted and drove back several attacks made by the Boers, and fell while directing and encouraging his men. Sir A Conan Doyle, in writing of this action, says: "The British loss included two gallant young Canadian officers, Borden and Birch.  The enemy tried to assault the position, but were beaten back each time with loss".
