William D?Olier Barrington was born on 17 August 1870. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, on 25 July 1890, becoming Lieutenant three years later, and Captain on 3 July 1901. He served in Gibraltar, September 1892-October 1895 and then in South Africa with the 38th Field Company from 7 January 1900, until 13 May 1903, when he he died from enteric fever at Potchefstroom.
