Birkin | Richard Leslie | | Captain | BIRKIN, RICHARD LESLIE, Captain, was born 2 February 1863, third son of Sir Thomas Isaac Birkin, Baronet, and Harriet, daughter of Matthew Tebbutt, of Bluntisham. He was educated at Rugby. Captain Birkin served in the South African War, 1900-2; was mentioned twice in Despatches, and created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 27 September 1901]: "Richard Leslie Birkin, Captain, 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". He was invested by the King 18 December 1902. He retired from the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry as Major, and was given the Honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Notts TFA, Imperial Yeomanry.
