Benson | Richard Arthur Starling | | Captain | He died in Wynberg Hospital, on February 19th, 1900, from dysentery, contracted on the Modder River. He was the only son of Colonel Starling Benson, late commanding the 17th Lancers, was born in December 1869, and educated at Eton. He entered the Coldstream Guards from the 3rd Battalion Essex Regiment, in July 1890, being promoted Lieutenant January 1894, and Captain February 1899. Captain Benson, when war was declared, belonged to the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards, and was undergoing a course of instruction at the Ordnance College. He volunteered for active service, and being accepted, was posted to the 1st battalion, and joined it in South Africa.
