Bowen | Gerard Christopher | | Captain | BOWEN, GERARD CHRISTOPHER, Captain, was born 28 July 1864, son of Major General W T Bowen and Rosa Bowen (nee Pack). He was educated at Malvern College, and entered the Army 25 November 1885. He was promoted Captain 11 December 1893. He served in South Africa, in the Mounted Infantry, 1899-1902; during operations in Cape Colony, Orange River Colony and the Transvaal, 1899-1900, taking part in the operations in Cape Colony, Orange River Colony and the Transvaal 30 November 1900 to 31 May 1902. He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 10 September 1901]; received the Queen's Medal with three clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 27 September 1901]: "Gerard Christopher Bowen, Captain, Royal Munster Fusiliers. In recognition of services during operations in South Africa". The Insignia were presented by the King 18 December 1902. He retired from the Royal Munster Fusiliers 14 September 1904; was re-employed after the outbreak of the hostilities in 1914. He was mentioned in Despatches, and promoted Major, 1916. He married (1st), in 1889, Kathleen Rachel (died 1890), daughter of the Reverend H Y Russell, and (secondly), in 1896, Mildred Hilda, daughter of P Hughes.
