Barttelot | Walter George | | Captain | He was killed in action at Retief's Nek, July 23rd, 1900. He was the son of the first Baronet by Harriet, daughter of Sir Christopher Musgrave, of Edenhall, Cumberland. He was born in 1855, educated at Eton. He served for some years in the 5th Dragoon Guards, in which he attained the rank of Captain, retiring in 1879. In 1880, he was appointed Captain of the first Devon Yeomanry Cavalry, and in 1886, Captain and honorary Major of the second Volunteer Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, being appointed temporarily Captain in the army, March 1900. He married in 1879, Georgiana Mary, only daughter of G E Balfour of the Manor, Sidmouth. He was a JP and DL for Sussex, a JP for Devonshire and a County Councillor for the Western Division of Sussex. He is succeeded by his son, Walter Balfour Barttelot, born in 1880.
