Dickson-Poynder | John Poynder | | Lieutenant | DICKSON, JOHN QUAYLE, Captain, was born in 1800, son of Major General E J Dickson, of Castletown, Isle of Man, and Lucy Mylrea, youngest daughter of John Quayle, of Braust, Isle of Man. He was educated at King William's College, Isle of Man. He served in South Africa, with the Field Intelligence Department; was mentioned in Despatches; awarded the Queen's and King's Medals, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 31 October 1902]: "John Quayle Dickson, Captain, Field Intelligence Department. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". Major Dickson was a Member of the South African Native Affairs Commission, 1903-5; Adviser in Native Affairs to Orange River Colony Government, 1903-9; Resident Commissioner, Gilbert and Ellice Islands Protectorate, 1909-13; Colonial Secretary of the Falkland Islands, 1913-14; . Sub-Commandant, Alien's Detention Camp, Knockaloe, Isle of Man, 1915. He married, in 1888, Annie, daughter of William Hyde, of Grahamstown, and had two daughters. His only son, Captain E J Quayle-Dickson MC, fell in action in the European War.
