Browne | Percy Howe | | Lieutenant | BSACM Matabeleland 1893 (1) Rhodesia 1896. 1896: Lt. Gwelo Vol. Son of Major Lord Richard Brown, 96th Foot and a veteran of the Crimea War and the grandson of the 2nd Marquess of Sligo, was born at Reigate, Surrey, on 4 December 1868. He went out to South Africa, where his family had various business and political interests, and served as a Lieutenant in the Victoria Column during the operations in Rhodesia in 1893, and with the Gwelo Volunteers during the operations in Rhodesia in 1896. Commissioned Captain, Colonial Forces Staff, 24 September 1914, he served during the Great War in France from 9 October 1914, as a Censor and on the Special List; was thrice Mentioned in Despatches; MID London Gazette 4 January 1917, 11 December 1917, and 15 April 1920. Promoted Brevet Major, 10 January 1917; and awarded the Belgian Order of Leopold II and the Portuguese Order of Aviz, finishing the War on general employment on the disposal of surplus stores.
