Bird | Christopher John | | | Was born at Maritzburg Dec 30, 1855, and is son of John Bird, CMG, formerly Treasurer of Natal, whose father, Lieutenant Colonel C Bird, was formerly Colonial Secretary, of the Cape Colony. Mr C J Bird was educated in Maritzburg, and entered the Natal Civil Service in 1874. He was appointed Assistant Colonel Secretary, in 1888, and on the establishment of responsible government in 1893 was made Principal Under-Secretary. He is also Chairman of the Civil Service Board, and JP for Natal. He held a commission in the Maritzburg Rifles from 1885 to 1887, and received the Boer War medal for assistance rendered by the civil administration to the military in Natal in 1899-1902. He married in 1887 Edith, daughter of Win. Armstrong, MRCS Eng. | Unknown |
