In 1896 he acted as Fencing Commissioner; was appointed Resident Magistrate and Civil Commissioner at Mafeking in 1897, and Special Commissioner during the Langberg Rebellion in 1897. In 1900 he was appointed Resident Magistrate at Uitenhage.
