Besley | Arthur Charles Gordon | | 2nd Lieutenant | He was killed in action at Wedelfontein, June 23rd, 1901. He was the younger son of Charles Robert Besley, of 14 Leinster Gardens, London and of Mrs Besley, 15 Palmeira Avenue, Hove, Sussex, and a great grandson of the ninth Marquis of Huntly, his mother being a daughter of Lord Cecil Gordon. He was born April 1881, educated at Wellington where he was in Bevir's, and joined his regiment from the Royal Military College in August 1900. 2nd Lieutenant Besley was a first-rate rider and good shot. He embarked for South Africa in March 1901, and served with Mounted Infantry, being present at many actions. A tablet to his memory was erected by his brother officers in St John's Church, Hove.
