He was born in June 1861, and having served in the ranks six years was appointed 2nd Lieutenant Royal Irish Rifles in July 1888, promoted Lieutenant August 1896, and Captain in the Wiltshire Regiment July 1896. He served in South Africa with the Mounted Infantry from October 1899.
