Fayle | Robert James Leach | | Major | FAYLE, ROBERT JAMES LEACH, Major, was born 1 April, 1857, son of B W Fayle, of Moor Park, Parsonstown. He joined the Army 4 February 1882; became Major, Royal Army Medical Corps, 4 February 1894 (previous service, 12 years). He served in the South African War, 1899-1902; took part in the Relief of Kimberley; operations in the Orange Free State, 1900; operations in Orange River Colony, 1900. He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 16 April, 1901]; received the Queen's Medal with three clasps; King's Medal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 19 April, 1901]: "Robert James Leach Fayle, Major, Royal Army Medical Corps. In recognition of services during the recent operations in South Africa". The Insignia were sent to Major Fayle through Colonel Byng. He became Lieutenant Colonel 4 February 1902, and retired 29 October 1902. Lieutenant Colonel Fayle married, in 1887, Mary, daughter of Joseph Leach, of Burwalls-Leigh Woods, near Bristol.
