Hon. J. J. Byron joined Australian Military Forces, 1885; commanded the Queensland Rgt., R.A.A., from 1895 to 1899; attaché with the United States Army in the Philippines War of 1899; served in the South African War, and was present at Belmont, Graspan, Modder River, and Magersfontein (severely wounded); was A.D.C. to Lord Roberts at the battles of Paardeberg, Poplar Grove and Driefontein (Despatches twice); extra A.D.C. to the Duke of Cornwall during his Colonial tour in 1901; A.A.G. for Artillery H.Q. Staff, Commonwealth Military Forces, 1902; in German S.W. African campaign of 1914-15 he commanded a mixed brigade, and was wounded; in the East Central African campaigns he commanded the 5th South African Infantry, 1st E.A. Brigade and Sayea Column (Three wound stripes; Despatches 4 times); served in Flanders, and as 2nd-in-command, Dunsterforce, N. W. Persia; Member Legislative Assembly. | Unknown |
