John William de Kock is a name that will forever be synonymous with Mafeking, having served throughout the historic siege, and held the office of both Mayor and Member of Parliament for that town. He was born in 1863 an Hope Town, Cape Colony, and educated at Barkly West. The son of a Lawyer, he was articled in Kimberley and admitted to practise in 1887 at Beaconsfield where he practised until 1892, when he took residence at Mafeking. During the siege of the town he held the position of Fort Commander and, upon the cessation of the siege, became officer commanding the Town Guard until the end of the war. It was whilst the siege was in progress that he defended Lieutenant Kenneth Murchieson, accused of murder, before a Court Martial presided over by Lord Edward Cecil. On another occasion he was imprisoned by Baden-Powell for his outspoken concern at the treatment of the Baralongs, but he was released later on the advice of Mafeking’s Resident Magistrate Mr. Bell. He was elected Mayor of Mafeking in 1903 and was the official head of the town when the Rt. Hon. Joseph Chamberlain paid his visit. He started his Parliamentary career in 1904, when he was elected, unopposed, Member for Mafeking, before which he had acted as Parliamentary Agent for his predecessor, Mr. Julius Weil. Finding his Parliamentary duties pressing, he relinquished the Mayoral chair in 1905, but continued to serve as a Councillor. In the 1906 Parliamentary session he moved the famous federation resolution, which was followed by Dr. Jameson’s minute to H.E. the High Commissioner, resulting in Lord Selborne’s historical production and the eventual Union of South Africa. De Kock had various mineral rights and was one of the founders of the Madibi Gold Fields and discoverers of the K’raaipan Geological formation. He died at East London on 28 June, 1948, aged 85 years.
