Batson | H | | Lieutenant Colonel | Lieutenant-Colonel Batson commanded the 2nd Battalion, Devon Regiment in South Africa from 15 December 1899 to 31 May 1902. He was present at the battles of Colenso (wounded), Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz, Tugela Heights, Pieter's Hill, Relief of Ladysmith, Botha's Pass, and Allman's Nek; also took part in the operations in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony (three times mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt. Colonel, CB, and Medal with six clasps). He retired in 1904 with the Brevet rank of Colonel.
