CampbellErnest GeorgeCaptainHe died on July 23rd, 1900, of wounds received two days previously in action near Bergendal. He was born in June 1873, educated at Eton and entered the Rifle Brigade December 1892, being promoted Lieutenant in July 1895, and Captain, April 1900. He served with the Tochi Field Force in the operations on the North-West Frontier of India in 1897-98, and was granted the medal with clasp. Captain Campbell fell while leading his men to storm a strong Boer position at Bergendal. Sir R Buller in his despatch of September 13th, 1900, much regrets the death of Captain Campbell who led his company "most gallantly" LG, February 8th, 1901.
