Blewitt | Charles Oakes Bates | | Lieutenant | He was killed in action near Blood River Poort, September 17th, 1901. He was born in July 1875, and educated at Wellington, where he was in the Blucher and a school Prefect. He entered the Rifle Brigade in July 1896, from the Royal Military College, and was promoted Lieutenant December 1898. He served in the Ladysmith Relief Operations of the 5th to the 7th February 1900, including the action at Vaal Kranz, when he was severely wounded. Lieutenant Blewitt was mentioned by General Lord Kitchener in his despatch of September 17th, 1901, for "his gallant conduct". He was buried at Vryheid.
