Ashfordby-TrenchardGeorge AugustusCaptainHe died of enteric at Elandsfontein.  He was the son of George Ashfordby-Trenchard, of Bella Vista, Torquay.  He was born in 1870, and appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Lancashire Artillery Militia February 1887.  In 1890 he resigned his commission and went on the stage; where, under the name of George Hippisley, he had considerable success.  When the war broke out he obtained a commission as Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment.  Soon after he was gazetted the Battalion was embodied, and having spent the summer on Salisbury Plain, it moved to Aldershot in October 1900.  Here, as in the Lancashire Artillery, he was reported as an energetic and zealous officer.  He was promoted Captain July 1900, and when, in March 1901, a detachment of Mounted Infantry for service in South Africa was supplied by the 5th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, Captain Ashfordby-Trenchard was selected for the command.  Since that time he saw much service, being on one occasion wounded.  He contracted enteric in January 1902, and after lying between life and death for many weeks passed away on March 21st.
