Marten | Leonard Humphrey | | 2nd Lieutenant | He was severely wounded in the attack on Colonel Benson's column at Brakenlaagte, October 30th, 1901, and died of his wounds at Elandsfontein on November 5th. He was born December 1878, and educated at Shrewsbury School, where he was in the rowing eight. He entered the Yorkshire Light Infantry, May 1900. At Brakenlaagte, 2nd Lieutenant Marten had his thigh broken by the the enemy's fire. When lying wounded he is stated to have been cruelly ill-treated by the Boers, in order to get his clothing, boots, etc. (See Captain Moor)
