van WijkJohannes MartinusVeldkornetDTD attributed to Veldkornet Johannes Marthinus van Wijk, Krugersdorp Commando.  From the copies of Form A and B it is known that he fought with the Krugersdorp Commando at Dundee, Ladysmith, Colenso, Spioenkop and Boschrand. His active service continued until 1902 when on the morning of 4th February he was captured at Gruisfontein along with 132 others including Commandant Sarel Alberts. He was sent to the prisoner of war camp on St. Helena and returned to the Transvaal in September.  By profession van Vijk was a teacher employed at a Government school in Vrededorp, but he had been enrolled on a part-time basis as a Veldkoronet in the Krugersdorp Commando at least by 1896. One document from the archives records an interesting event in which van Wijk recruits a Russian, Lehinnen Klatz, just before Spioenkop on the basis that the Russian “wanted to shoot the English”.  The book Commando Courageous – a Boer's Diary by R.W. Schikkerling describes “Poplap” van Wijk as a brisk and daring young fellow, one of the best in the field. He is also mentioned in a field report from General Louis Botha on the Battle of Colenso.
