Legge | Norton | | Captain | LEGGE, NORTON, Captain, served in the Sudan, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 17 November 189(5]: "Norton Legge, Captain, 20th Hussars. In recognition of services during the recent operations in Egypt and the Sudan". The Decoration was presented to Captain Norton Legge bv the Queen at Windsor 3 December 1896. He died 18 December 1900.

Legge | Norton Legge | | Lieutenant Colonel | He was killed in action at Nooitgedacht, December 13th, 1900. He was born June 1860, entered the 20th Hussars from the 3rd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, August 1883, was promoted Captain December 1887, and Major October 1898. Lieutenant Colonel Legge served in the Soudan Campaign in 1885, and was present at the engagement at Hasheen, the attack on the convoy March 24th, and at the destruction of Tamai, receiving the medal with clasp, and Khedive's star. He was also with the Egyptian Frontier Field Force, in 1885-86, was present at the investment of Kosheh, the Relief of Ambigole, the engagement at Giniss, and the subsequent pursuit to Absarat, being mentioned in despatches. His next experience of active service was with the Dongola Expeditionary Force under Lord (then Sir Herbert) Kitchener in 1896, in command of four squadrons of Egyptian Cavalry, including the engagements at Firket (wounded), and Hafir, and the capture of Dongola, when he was again mentioned in despatches, and received the DSO, British medal, and Khedive's medal with two clasps. As Brigade Major of Egyptian Cavalry he also took part in the operations in 1898, including the battle of Khartoum, and subsequent pursuit, was mentioned in despatches, and received two clasps to the Khedive's medal. He served in the South African War from its commencement, and was in command of a corps of Mounted Infantry, was mentioned in despatches, LG February 8th, 1901, and promoted brevet Lieutenant Colonel November 29th, 1900, and also awarded the CB.
