Gilliat | John Babington | | Captain | GILLIAT, JOHN BABINGTON, Captain, was born 10 April 1868, only son of J S Gilliat. He was called to the Bar, Inner Temple, in 1894; and served in the South African War, 1900-1, with the Imperial Yeomanry; and took part in operations in the Transvaal 30 November 1900 to February 1901; was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 10 September 1901]; received the Queen's Medal with four clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 27 September 1901]: "John Babington Gilliat, Captain, 12th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". The Insignia were presented to him by the King 29 October 1901. He became Major, Hertfordshire Yeomanry; and Lieutenant Colonel; and Honorary Captain in the Army. Lieutenant Colonel Gilliat married, in 1908, Muriel, eldest daughter of G Grinnell Milne, and they had two sons and one daughter.
