Fortescue | Lionel Henry Dudley | | Major | He was killed in action at Diamond Hill, near Pretoria, June 11th, 1900. He was the third son of the Earl Fortescue, was born November 1857, and educated at Harrow. He entered the 5th Dragoon Guards November 1876, transferred to the 17th Lancers, August 1877, was promoted Lieutenant November 1878, Captain November 1886, and Major January 1896. He was adjutant of his regiment December 1879 to February 1885, and served with the 17th Lancers in the Zulu War of 1879, was present at the engagement at Ulundi, receiving the medal with clasp. Major Fortescue was ADC to the Major General commanding the Cavalry Brigade at Aldershot, February 1885 to December 1889, and Commandant School of Instruction, Yeomanry and Volunteer Cavalry, Aldershot, January 1895 to December 1896. He was appointed Assistant Military Secretary, and ADC to Lieutenant General Lord William Seymour, commanding the troops in Canada, June 1898, but resigned his appointment in November 1899, and proceeded to South Africa with his regiment February 1900. He then served in the ORC and in the advance on Pretoria.

Fortescue | S J | | Commander | Seymour John Fortescue was born on 10 February 1856, second son of 3rd Earl Fortescue. He entered the Navy in 1869, and was Lieutenant of Superb at the bombardment of Alexandria, 11 Jul 1882, and during the Egyptian war. Lieutenant of Sphinx during the naval and military operations in the Eastern Soudan, at Suakin 1884-5. Member of the Naval Intelligence Department, April 1891 to April 1893. He was appointed Equerry-in-Waiting to HRH the Prince of Wales on 4 April 1893. He was awarded the CVO, 22 Jun 1897, on the commemoration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. He commander of HMS Monarch in the Boer war and was Naval ADC to Field Marshal Lord Roberts. Mentioned in despatches and awarded the CMG for services during the Boer War, Equerry-in-Waiting to King Edward VII on the occasion of his Coronation, 9 Aug 1902. He was created a KCVO on 14 June 1910. He served as Equerry to King George V, 1910 to 1936, and to King George VI, 1936 to 1942. Sergeant-at-Arms in the House of Lords, 1910 to 1936. Employed during the Great War as Naval Censor in the Official Press Bureau from 1914. Created GCVO 1 Jan 1931. Sir Seymour Fortescue died on 20 March 1942.
