Fletcher | Edward Walter | | Major | He was killed in action at Lichtenburg March 3rd, 1901. He was the eldest son of Colonel H C Fletcher, CMG Scots Guards, by his marriage with Lady Harriet Marsham, 2nd daughter of Charles, 3rd Earl of Romney. He was born January 1865, educated at Cheltenham, and entered the Essex Regiment from the 3rd Battalion Royal Scots May 1885, was transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers as Lieutenant July 1885, being promoted Captain December 1892, and Major July 1900. He served with the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers throughout the Hazara Campaign 1888, receiving the medal with clasp, and was ADC (extra) to the Viceroy of India August to September 1888. Major Fletcher served in South Africa from the commencement of the war, and was present at the action at Stormberg December 10th, 1899. After Pretoria was entered by Field Marshal Earl Roberts, Major Fletcher commanded a post at Vereeniging, and subsequently joined his battalion at Lichtenburg, where he fell in the attack on that place by De La Key. His name was inscribed in the Eleanor Cross War Memorial erected at Cheltenham College.
