O'Farrell | M | | Major | O'FARRELL, M, Major, was born in October 1852. He served in the South African War, with the Victorian Mounted Rifles, 1900-2; with the Rhodesian Field Force, on the Staff, Western District, and as Staff Officer, No 13 Martial Law Area, Cape Colony District; operations in Rhodesia, Transvaal and Orange River Colony. He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 29 July 1902]; received the Queen's Medal with five clasps, the King's Medal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 31 October 1902]: "M O'Farrell, Major, Victorian Contingent. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". He was placed on the retired list, with the rank of Major, 1 August 1908.
