Whiteley | Frank | | Born at Bradford, Jan 3, 1856, and went to Natal in 1872, engaging up country in the ivory and ostrich feather trade. He visited the Zambesi, Lake Ngami, and Matabeleland in the 'seventies, and in 1890 started business in Mafeking under the style of Whiteley, Walker and Company, and subsequently opened branches in Bulawavo, Palapye, and other places. Mr Whiteley was President of the Mafeking Chamber of Commerce for several years, and was Mayor of the town during the siege, being several times mentioned in despatches, and receiving the CMG in 1901. He was Director of the Buttermere Green Slate Company (Cumberland). His recreations were golf and shooting, and he married, in 1892, Sarah Emily, daughter of John Walker, JP.
