O.M.G. For me this is a very hard question to answer.....

1. An original named Boer War Stetson as worn by the Strathcona's Horse complete with badge...... Very Very Rare......

2. Queen's South Africa Medal named to Irish Guards, never thought I would ever get one......

3. Queen's South Africa Medal to the Regimental Intelligence Officer of Strathcona's Horse c/w Edward 7th Coronation, not connected to Stetson......

And a couple of others.......

Mike

Have to add a 4th, A Queen's South Africa Medal to Canadian Field Hospital......

How could I forget.......

The newspaper article about the potential use of armoured cars in South Africa. That turned into one of my favourite threads on the forum.

On the memorials side, probably the ABW memorial in Eamont Bridge, near Penrith.

Mike,

A very good thread and thank you for posting :)
You certainly had a most excellent year the Strathcona's Horse stetson must be your pinnacle
Closely followed by your Irish Guards, mike you have had a very good year :)
My highlight must be my first Mafeking

Also picked up a couple of Talana's QSA's which I was happy about.
And enjoyed my Wakefield medal fairs throughout the year in particular the one were DJB attended and I was lucky enough to add to my ABW library courtesy of David's generous discounts :)

Cheers
Paul :)

I seldom buy anything these days but when I saw a pair that I missed some nine years ago at DNW enter the market place again, I reluctantly decided to put my hand in my pocket and bought them, to complete the "union" as far as Barton's fusilier one hundred of Colonel Mahon's flying column goes, I was missing a member of the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers!

My best Boer War acquisitions of the year were:

1. QSA (TH, RoL) - Trooper A R Smith, Murray's Scouts.

2. QSA (RoL) - Bearer G Doble, Natal Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Killed in action on 20 January 1900 at Venter's Spruit in the prelude
to the Battle of Spioenkop.

3. QSA (Natal) - Private F R Rowell, Maritzburg Ambulance Corps.
The medal came with its original ribbon and box of issue, as well
as Rowell's leather instrument pouch still with some of its contents.

My best finds were a few nice old Colonial badges mainly Natal Carbineers and Umvoti Mounted Rifles.

Medal wise... no Victorian medals but a few beauties from later conflicts.

Brett, I have been keeping my eyes peeled for Pte Rowells write-up?

Regards
Brian
