Jonas Lowe, son of William & Margaret Lowe of 40 Wigan Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield an apprentice 'hinge-maker' was born in Warrington c1862 and attested for the 11th Brigade in his home town on 28th May 1881 aged 19. Posted to 2nd Bn Royal Lancaster Regt he served in India March 1883 through February 1893, returning home joining the 1st Bn for 2 years, qualifying as Cpl & then Sgt before becoming attached to the permanent staff of the 4th Bn The Kings Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment. Served South Africa 26th Jan 1900 through11th July 1901 where he was mentioned in Lord Roberts despatches of 10/9/01 and gained the Distinguished Conduct Medal (LG 27/09/01). Discharged at Lancaster 27th May 1906 in posession of 5 GC badges, having completed 25 years service.
