Ewart | J W | 4479 | Private | DCM Ed VII (Pte., 20th Hussars); QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA, 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen, Belfast (Pte., 10th Hussars); KING'S SOUTH AFRICA, 2 clasps (Pte., 20th Hussars). DNW Apr 94 £1200. John Walter Ewart was born at Cockermouth, Northumberland, in February 1873 and joined the 20th Hussars on 10 March 1891. A qualified Marksman and Signaller, he saw service in India before reverting to the Reserve just prior to the outbreak of hostilities in South Africa. Quickly recalled, initially for service with the 10th Hussars but afterwards with his old regiment, the 20th, he saw extensive service in the Cavalry Division's advance on Pretoria. It was while attached to the 6th Dragoons, however, that he received the recommendation that resulted in his D.C.M.
