Very nice Mike, I wonder what was going through their minds as they landed in Natal, an awful long way from home and still all that work to be done on the Platrand ridge, Manchester Fort was built by members of F and H Companies, it was one of the most impressive of Ladysmith's defensive positions.

Never mind Mike, the old order has not quite gone, you can still buy Coal Tar soap, quite absurd and very Victorian, though, an acquired taste perhaps.

I'm afraid the flat caps, pigeons and whippets have gone forever!

Frank,
A very fine example memorial and so pleasing to see it has stood the test of time.
It was also considerate of Starbucks to position themselves so if Captain Fisher needed refreshment it is handy, though I suppose his choice would be tea.
Thanks for posting ;)

Paul :)

This bronze was the work of Harno Thorneycroft and it has been said that he used Captain Fisher as the model for the standing soldier with fixed bayonet! :woohoo:

Back then

The other day!

"From a billow of the rolling veldt we looked back, and black columns were coming up behind us."
