There you go Paul, number fifty, 3948 Private Andrew King 1st Battalion Manchester Regt, from Wigan, condition of this medal is at best NVF but I am not bothered, it was his medal and he was there during the awful siege, until he was invalided back home in the following summer.

Paul,
I think that I should have added that the reason I like the 1st Manchester's so much was that I was brought up with the tales of daring do and the history was then, and remains to an extent, all around to be seen, even today, although, both the regiment and their famous depot, which became Ladysmith Barracks, in Ashton have gone forever. :(

Their Anglo Boer War memorial was unveiled in 1908 by Ian Hamilton himself, he said "They covered themselves with glory there, they never did better"
This bronze was the work of Harno Thorneycroft and it has been said that he used Captain Fisher as the model for the standing soldier with fixed bayonet! :woohoo:

Back then

The other day!

Infact, Captain Fisher has had a rather busy Christmas. :)

He has seen so many though!

Thorneycroft did make one error, he appears to have depicted these men in home service dress wearing the embroidered cloth shoulder title, which was not worn during the war.
