Many of the Native Scouts were members of the Natal Native Congress, which was established after the Boer War by well-educated Christian Zulus, some of whom had been the backbone of the Scouts and were disenchanted with their treatment by the white establishment of Natal. Some were present in Bloemfontein in January 1912 when the South African Native National Congress, the forerunner of the ANC, was founded. Two of the Chief Native Scouts, Simeon Kambule and Stephanus Xaba, played important roles in the establishment of this organisation.

Another Boer War veteran at the founding of the ANC was Sol Plaatje from Kimberley.
