27447 TROOPER EDWARD WALTON: COMMANDER-IN-CHIEFS BODYGUARD

QUEENS SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL
CLASPS: CAPE COLONY/TRANSVAAL
CONDITION: NEF. MOUNTED ON BUCKLE. ORIGINAL RIBBON. ATTRACTIVE BLACK TONING.

BIRMINGHAM BOER WAR TRIBUTE MEDAL
CONDITION: NEF. MOUNTED ON DATE BUCKLE

Edward Walton attested to the Commander-in-Chiefs Bodyguard on 29th December 1900 at Durban and was discharged 21st June 1901. I can find no other record of service for him.

His Record of Service with the CinC Bodyguard records his age as 23 with no previous military service, British and a Fitter by Trade.
He stated that he was married and his next of kin was his wife Mrs. E. Walton at no.1 Hawthorn Terrace, Parker Street, Birmingham.

His entitlement to the QSA and clasps are confirmed on the Medal Roll WO100/243.

As a collector it is always both pleasurable and desirable to acquire items in as original order as possible. With the QSA to Trooper Walton, the buckle is attached to the original ribbon with cotton stitching. This I can imagine Edward painstakingly sewing together for him to wear over a hundred years ago perhaps!

I acquired the QSA with Birmingham Tribute medal together a while back and could not be absolutely certain that they shared the same origin with a few Edward Waltons around the Birmingham area at the appropriate period of time.
However, when David was able to post documents to the Commander-in-Chiefs Bodyguard including Trooper Walton's, I was able to be certain that Edward did indeed hail from Birmingham and the chances are that he was indeed presented with the tribute medal of the city of Birmingham.
Many thanks to you David.

PRIVATE EMIL HASELAN: C.C. FORCES
FORMERLY COMMANDER-IN-CHIEFS BODYGUARD (22774)

QUEENS SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL
CLADPS: CAPE COLONY/SOUTH AFRICA 1902

CONDITION: GVF.

Emil Haselan attested to the Commander-in-Chiefs Bodyguard on 29th November 1900 possibly at Pietermaritzburg. His service number issued was 22774. Where we see 'Squadron' in the top right hand side of the document the number 426 is entered.
He was 22 years of age and was a Trader by profession.
His nationality was described as Colonial German . His father, Andries Haselan, given as next of kin resided at Debe Nek District, Kingwilliamstown, Cape Colony.
Obviously, the Haselan family felt more loyalty to the Imperial Forces than the Boers.
Emil was discharged from the Bodyguard on 31st May 1901 at Johannesburg.
His next military service came with his enlistment in the Cape Colonial Forces to which his QSA is inscripted.
The Medal Roll for the C.C.F. (WO100/239) has him serving with 'G' Squadron under Major H.J. Thompson.
His medal with two clasps is confirmed on this document.

Again my thanks to David for finding Emil Haselan's Record of Service document.

Hi Mike,

In addition to the Record of Service as posted by David, have made a few searches on your man as follows:

25572 TROOPER WILLIAM RADFORD: COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF'S BODYGUARD

QUEENS SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL
CLASPS: CC/OFS/TV/SOUTH AFRICA 1901

His entitlement to QSA and clasps confirmed on Medal Roll.

Attested to CinC Bodyguard at Cape Town on 29th December 1900, completing 192 days of service with the unit and discharged time expired 8th July 1901. His character was described as ' very good'.
His address after discharge was given as 3 Montrose Villas, Kloof Road, Cape Town.

Findmypast shows a 25 year old John Radford sailing on the ship 'Gaika' departing Southampton on 16th August 1902 bound for the Cape. He is a single man and a carpenter by trade. Many of the passengers aboard thi ship were artisans such as bricklayers and masons. Perhaps he was returning to South Africa after sorting his affairs out in the UK?

The Amalgamated Society of Joiners states that his union membership was transferred to Cape Town on 21st July 1902 from Northampton, England.

Could possibly be the same man? The dates would allow it.
