22576 TROOPER CARL RAUCHOLD NEILSSON: COMMANDER-IN-CHIEFS BODYGUARD

Carl Rauchold Neilsson (surname as impressed to rim of QSA )attested to the Commander-in-Chiefs Bodyguard at Pietermaritzburg on 20th November 1900 and was discharged time expired at Johannesburg on 17th May 1901.

QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL
CLASPS: ORANGE FREE STATE/TRANSVAAL/SOUTH AFRICA 1901
CONDITION: NEF/ FREE FROM EDGE KNOCKS/BEAUTIFULLY DARK TONED(IN MY OPINION!)

Entitlement to the QSA and clasps confirmed on the medal roll for the Bodyguard.

I can find no evidence of service with another unit during the Anglo Boer War and there are no comments in the Remarks column of the rolls.
Unfortunately, and unusually, David was unsuccessful in raising this soldiers attestation documents (many thanks for looking) Searches of Ancestry, FMP could not reveal much more about his life. But, Familysearch had numerous C R Neilssons (or slight variations in the spelling) listed.
The only half satisfactory individual being one Carl Reinhold Neilsson whose death notification describes a Mechanical Engineer, who was a widower, born in Sweden around 1853 who died at the age of 70 of pulmonary tuberculosis and heart failure in Johannesburg Hospital. If the middle name was misspelled on the nominal roll, which we know is not beyond the realms of possibility, and this is our man, he would have been 47 years old at attestation. Just possible!

Another consideration when looking at the rolls was the men of a similar surname as follows:
27535 TPR. ALEX CHRISTIAN STEEN NIELSON
22309 TPR. EDWARD ALEXANDER NIELSON
34751 TPR. EDWARD NILSSON
32908 TPR. ALEXANDER NEILSON
Plenty of scope for more misspelled surnames! Maybe brothers or sons of Carl?

I will keep looking!
