Maybe:

The 3rd & the II fingers off the right hand have been blown off and 1 phalanx each remains. This the result of service but not of the (climate)

(Fingers are numbered from 1 [thumb] to 5 [pinky]; each finger bone is a phalanx - promimal, distal and terminal phalanx, so he now only has his proximal phalanx on his R index and middle finger)
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Dave - What are your man's name, number and regiment? He looks to be a prime candidate for a PIN 71 (men invalided to pension) file at the NA.

Hello David
You are quite correct, he was a candidate for PIN 71 of which I have.
Unfortunately, I'm having problems with his original attestation papers.
Early days regarding research, but I haven't managed a place of birth yet.
My man was Edward Clarke born 1873. 3787 Private 2nd Battalion KOYLI . Joined up in 1892 at Pontefract. Spent 8 months in S A then Invalided home August 1900 with the gunshot wound to his hand. I have a couple of addresses for him, but no luck on finding his attestation papers yet. Additional paperwork states he went blind in 1914 and various organisations tried to get his pension increased. Any pointers to his place of birth or census records would be very helpful.

That was fascinating, Rob. I would not have been able to transcribe that.
