Robert Brown Mackie was born in Avondale, Stratheven, Lanarkshire, and enlisted in the Royal Engineers at Chatham in February 1900, aged 18 years. He subsequently witnessed active service out in South Africa from December 1901 until the end of hostilities (Medal & 3 clasps), and in Somaliland from July 1903 until December 1904, including the action at Jidballi (Medal & 2 clasps).
