Hutchens | Harold John | | Surgeon Captain | HUTCHENS, HAROLD JOHN, Surgeon Captain, served in the South African War, with the Queensland Contingent, 1901-2; in operations in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony, April 1901 to May 1902; operations in Cape Colony, April, July and August 1901. He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 29 July 1902]; awarded the Queen's Medal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 31 October 1902]: "Harold John Hutchens, Surgeon Captain, Queensland Contingent. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". He became Professor of Comparative Pathology at Durham University. He was a Master of Arts, a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, and held the Oxford Diploma of Public Health. Captain Hutchens married, in 1906, Ada Muriel, daughter of Charles Clay, MRCS, of The Manor House, Dewsbury, and had one son.
