He acquired Prospector's Licence No. 968 on 1 September 1891 at Tuli, for the purpose of prospecting for gold in Mashonaland and declared that to be his occupation when he attested for the Victoria Column in 1893. After the occupation of Matabeleland he obtained Prospector's Licences Nos. 13047 and 2080 at Bulawayo on 24 December 1894 and 16 September 1895 respectively. On 15 November 1895 he pegged ten claims in what he called the 'Bantam' Reef, in Gwelo District. He served in B Troop, Mashonaland Mounted Police, during the Jameson Raid early in 1896, being sent back to England with the others for trial. Returning to Rhodesia he attested into the British South Africa Company Police as a Trooper on 1 November 1896, being promoted to Sergeant 3rd Class the same day. He became a Sub-Inspector on 1 June 1913, Assistant District Superintendent/Lieutenant on 14 October 1913, and resigned his commission on 13 March 1914. Rhodesia (541 T. S. Maj: J. S. M. Pender.
