Reginald Hayes-Sadler was born 3 January 1856, second son of Sir James Hayes-Sadler, K.C.M.G.; 2nd Lieutenant, Yorkshire Regiment, 3 January 1878; resigned his commission 1885; Major, 3rd Bn. K. O. Y. L. I. , 19 May 1894; resigned 1904. He served in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 on the lines of communication and was present at Kafr Dowar and subsequently attached to the 38th Foot. He was Special Correspondent of the Army and Navy Gazette during the operations in Matabeleland in 1893, and on Special Service with the 7th Hussars during the operations in Mashonaland in 1897. He took part in the Boer War, on the Staff, as Commandant Post Camp at Pretoria; afterwards as Assistant Provost Marshal of the Standerron district. During the Natal rebellion in 1906, he was employed as a Special Service Officer as Commandant of the Torgast District. He was employed on the staff of the Political Department in East Africa during the Great War, attached to the S. A. S. C. , Transport and Remounts, and later attached to the Belgian and Portuguese Headquarters. He embarked for England from Wynburg Hospital in August, 1917, and relinquished his commission in November, 1917. The group is sold with additional official replacement medals for Egypt 1882 and Matabeleland 1893. The combination of Matabeleland 1893 with Mashonaland 1897 was awarded on only 8 occasions.
