Oliphant | Laurence James | Major General | Born in 1846 He served in the Sudan Campaign in 1885 (Khedive's star, medal and clasp). From 1894-8 he commanded the Grenadier Guards, and subsequently was in command of a brigade at Aldershot. He served in South Africa in 1901-2 on the Staff of the South African Field Force; was in command of the Home District and of the Second Guards' Brigade in 1903 and commanded the London District. He was created KCVO on the occasion of the King's birthday, 1905. He was appointed General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command, 1907-11, being awarded the KCB in 1911. He died on 6 July 1914.
