Bam | Pieter Cauzius van Blommestein | | Captain | Born at Cape Town July 29, 1869; was eldest surviving son of J A Bam (formerly Member of the Legislative Assembly for Cape Town), and was educated at the Normal College (Cape Town), the Diocesan College, Rondebosch, the South African College (C T), and Cheltenham College, England. He entered the Cape Garrison Artillery in 1892, from which he resigned in Aug, 1901, and served through the greater part of the Boer War, for which he holds the medal. Sir Pieter probably holds a record in having fought three Parliamentary elections in six months. In Jan, 1904, he stood as an Independent Progressive for Cape Town, and was beaten by a small majority. In March of the same year he unsuccessfully contested Victoria West against the Bond leader (Hon J X Merriman), but in the following July at the election for the two new scats for Cape Town, he was elected at the top of the poll by a large majority. He belonged to an old Dutch family, and was the youngest member returned to the House of Assembly for Cape Town. | Cape Garrison Artillery |
