1224 Private John Wharton QSA (5), Cape Colony, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal & Laing's Nek

Pte J. Wharton is confirmed on the Thorneycroft Mounted Infantry medal roll with the clasp entitlements and enlisted on the 27th October 1899.

Unfortunately I don't have a copy (yet) of Thorneycroft's 'Unbuttoned' by Robin Droogleever but if anyone does please can they let me know if there is any additional information in his book regarding Pte Wharton that could assist me with my research; Thanks.

"Unbuttoned" records that "1224 Pte. Wharton, J" of TMI served with C Sqn., 27/10/99 to 9/11/1900 and earned his CC clasp with DEOVR. He hailed from Belfast, Ireland.

Hi IL,

Thanks for that; I missed the reference to "Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles".

Looking at the KSA medal roll he served with them as well from the 13th May 1901 to 31st May 1902 with regimental number 2897 & entitled to both date clasps; hopefully I can re-unite them (QSA & KSA) in the future.

Thanks again.....

17780 PRIVATE GEORGE GEAR
THORNEYCROFT'S MOUNTED INFANTRY

George Gear was born in 1879 in Llansamlet, near Swansea, Wales.
The Census of 1881 has George living at 3Penllebrain Row, Swansea Higher and Lower, Swansea, Glamorganshire. His father William Gear(31) was a Coalminer, his mother Ann was 34 years old.
The rest of the family comprised of Sarah A (5). The family found a supplement to the wages of a miner in the lodging of William Davis, a 29 year old Coker and John Harris, a 19 year old Coalminer.

He was the son of William Gear who resided at Blasent Terrace, Llansamlet according to his Attestation Form for the TMI in which he enlisted at Bulawayo on 3rd January 1902.
By the standard of the times, George was a strapping lad of 6' 1 1/2" in height, 23 years of age and with fair complexion. His hair was light brown in colour.
He had completed previous service of three years and nine months with Bristol City Police back in the UK, and a further year with the Southern Rhodesian Constabulary.

Queen's South Africa medal awarded to Private George Gear. Medal Roll for TMI WO100/277 confirms entitlement to clasps for Cape Colony and Transvaal. Also entitled to clasp South Africa 1902 off the TMI Medal Roll
