Morning Everyone

A sad end to this medallion. After purchasing this from a JHB dealer, it was despatched using Speed Services door to door. Item was shipped on Wednesday and I received parcel on Thursday. The A4 size white padded envelope was tampered with and so was the inner brown envelope. The medallion was stolen and all I received was an empty envelope that was stapeled together.

You can imagine how I felt when I saw it was empty.

The Horbury Tribute Medal page has now been updated with a full list of the 24 recipients.

The decision to present medals wasn’t made until 13 Dec 1902, when a sizeable minority of the Horbury Relief Fund Committee voted against the proposal, which was eventually carried by 9 votes to 6. Interestingly, the resolution clearly stated that the men of the two KOYLI Active Service Companies would not receive the tribute as they had already been given medals by Ossett. Until they discovered that the latter medal had been presented from a newspaper fund the intention had been to reimburse Ossett the cost of the tributes distributed to the Horbury men, in effect making the Ossett medal a gift from the Horbury Relief Fund.
