General L. Botha
Ref: AM 94; Hern 214; Laidlaw 0931.
Silver. Fitted with suspender loop and ring.
DIAMETER: 27.92 mm
WEIGHT: 9.06 grams
ARTIST: G. Devreese, 1902.

It is thought that this medallion was one of series of medallions depicting Boer War Generals which were struck when General Botha visited Europe after the end of the War.

This is the only known contemporary silver medal of Louis Botha who later became the first Prime minister of the Union of South Africa in 1910.

Godefroid Devreese (also known as Godfried de Vreese) was a Belgian sculptor and medallist. He was born in the Belgian City of Courtrai born in 1861. After having started his training at the Academy of Kortrijk, Godefroid Devreese moved to Brussels and continued his training there at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1881 to 1886, having as teachers the sculptors Eugène Simonis and Charles Van der Stappen. He moved to Schaerbeek in 1884 and remained there until the start of World War II. He died in Brussels in 1941.
