In Memoriam Medal by J.J. Hall & Co. 1904
Ref: AM 169; Hern 382; ME South African Republic 8; Laidlaw 0183a.
White metal. With suspension ring and original black ribbon
DIAMETER: 29.65 mm
WEIGHT: 10.55 grams.
ARTIST: J. Hall & Co.

President Kruger died in Clarens, Switzerland on 14 July 1904 and was subsequently buried in Pretoria on 16 December 1904. It is believed that this medal was issued at the time of his funeral.

James Hall & Co was listed in a Johannesburg directory as an “engraver, rubber stamps, wood and type metal blocks, inscriptions, crests, monograms, etc.”

Volkstem Funeral Medal 1904

Gold. Edge impressed 14K (14 ct).
DIAMETER: 28.54 mm
WEIGHT: 12.23 grams.
ARTIST: J.C. Weinecke (obverse); Begeer (reverse)

The Pretoria newspaper Die Volksstem distributed these medals on the day when President Kruger was buried in Pretoria. The Weinecke bust was modelled from life whilst the President was in Europe, and, according to the Cape Town newspaper “Ons Land”, this medal sold for 1/6d in bronze and was very popular.

Bronze. Similar to previous Lot but with added loop. 28.50 mm diam., 13.14 grams.

Issued to commemorate Kruger’s Presidency in the Raadzaal, from his first election in 1883 to his departure into exile in 1900. Both dates appear on the reverse.

Unveiling of Kruger’s Statue in Pretoria, 1954.

Silver. Fitted with safety pin brooch. 32.19 mm diam., 16.93 grams.
ARTIST: Adapted from Otto Schultz’s design

Issued to commemorate the unveiling of the Kruger statue on church Square in central Pretoria on 11th October 1954. The medallions were made by the South African Mint to the order of the “Krugergenootschap”, Pretoria and distributed by Volkskas Bank.

The old Z.A.R. coinage dies were adapted for this series.
