Hi Guys, well I too was surprised at some of the prices. I managed to get Lot 198 - high price but as IL said, its what you're prepared to go to if its your specific field of interest.

I would like to ask you all though, Lots 810 & 816 were interesting as they had Elandslaagte clasps but couldn't find them on the roll - shouldn't DNW be stating that a particular person may not have been entitled to the clasp?

Regards
Ian

Ian,

Congratulations on the new Talana pair.

Lot 810: Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Elandslaagte, Orange Free State, Transvaal (2315 Tpr: P. Adams, S.A. Lt: Horse) officialy re-impressed naming, minor edge bruising, very fine £40-60

Sold for £140 and there was a footnote to say he was not on the Elandslaagte roll.

Lot 816: Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Transvaal (8108 Pte. J. Mullins. Manch: Regt.) very fine £80-100. Sold for £190.

This appeared in the last auction and did not sell. DNW did say he entitlement is to CC, OFS and SA02.

Best wishes
David

For both the online catalogue states not entitled or not found on roll.

Thanks David & SWB,

Might have bought them just for the clasps - not something that comes up every day and not really sure what they would be worth?

I'm glad O'Brien ended up with you David. I suspect I may regret selling it but I know you will appreciate it more!

I didn't win at DNW after all - Bidder Beware!:

Thoroughly annoyed with DNW - I thought I had won lot 786 as it hammered at my max commission bid of £150.

However I got screwed because in the bidding steps I was at £140, the next bid was made live to £150 and in that circumstance the precedence of a commission bid is ignored. As explained by DNW I would have had to have left a commission bid "plus 1" to go £160. As also explained if there had been two commission bids of the same value then precedence is applied.

So my maximum bid was ignored in favour of live bidding.

I would have thought in this situation precedence would apply and the live bidders would have had to actually beat my maximum and go to £160. The auctioneers would actually make more money.

Auctioneering is an arcane world.

Oh well, I can afford now branded beans instead of own label :)
