Major [Scooner?] paying native line watchers at Holfontein Camp

Also note first on the list 2nd Lieutenant C O Lambert

Continuing on the same medal roll one can find candidates for Kennedy the servant and the cooks Walker & Wilkinson - but all common names and hence for each more than one candidate. Searching through their attestation papers/service records (presuming they can be found) might throw some light but unlikely.

Well done David; that's them.

The roll was signed at Ventersburg Road, ORC, which features in the Album.

Sturgy and others interested.
Savannah's Boer War Officers shows Scoones, F.T.F. (Maj, R.Fus). 01 - 02 .Op.Rations (??) in ORC 01-02. QSA with four clasps; presumably including SA1901 and SA1902.
A highly interesting run of pictures. I wonder how many albums of similar vein are still out there.
Also, it was interesting to see a Magazine Lee Metford rifle in one of the pics at such a late date in the campaign. Of course, it could have had an Enfield rifling barrel to replace the original, shot out. Which was done.
Thanks for posting
Regards
IL.

Using Scoones rather than Scooner brings him up on a later medal roll - but obviously one and the same man.

This I think settles the matter at Fitzmaurice Thomas Favre Scoones:

A public family tree on Ancestry gives these dates for him 9 January 1865 to 6 June 1940. Definitely still in the army at the time of the Great War but don't know what he did. 3 of his 4 sons were in the army with one killed in training during the Great War and another eventually becoming a knighted General.

Thank you for the adidtional information and clarification; that's awesome.

Thanks also for the link to the picture of Capt. Heads grave stone; I have updated the original post (Part 6) accordingly.

Going to earlier captions we have Bean (the clean) and Hutton. There is no Bean on the medal roll but there is a 1123 Private A Beare (a shoemaker of London). Also only one Hutton - 2893 Private C Hutton (paperwork awol).

"Robert and Friend". Assumed Robert given name of fellow officer but no officers have an initial of R but there is a Lieutenant Prescott-Roberts. There is also a 3206 Private S Friend (paperwork also awol).

Presumably the album belonged to an officer of the 5th RF - here is the medal roll for the other officers:
