Russell | Cecil Pomeroy | | Lieutenant | Died of enteric at Intombi Field Hospital, Ladysmith, January 5th, 1900. He was the eldest son of Colonel C J Russell, RE, of Clavinia, Weymouth, was born in November 1875, and educated at Weymouth College, where he was in the rifle team. He was also a good gymnast. He entered the Leicestershire Regiment from the Sligo Artillery Militia in June 1896, being promoted Lieutenant April 1899. He was present at the battle of Talana Hill with his battalion, and the subsequent retirement to Ladysmith, and also at the battle of Lombard's Kop. Several of his direct ancestors served in his regiment (formerly the 17th Foot), one of them at its formation in 1688 to 1729, and the next from 1727 to 1761. Lieutenant Russell was buried in the cemetery at Intombi, and a marble cross and pedestal were erected over the grave to his memory by his brother officers.
