McMurdo | Arthur Montagu | | Lieutenant | McMURDO, ARTHUR MONTAGU, Captain, was born at Fulham 15 March 1861, youngest son of General Sir M McMurdo and Susan, daughter to Sir Charles Napier; was educated at Haileybury and Sandhurst, and joined 71st Highland Light Infantry in 1882; was attached Egyptian Army, 1886-1894; operations in Sudan, 1888-89; action at Handoub, wounded, camel shot (Fourth Class Medjidie); attack on Fort Khor Mousa; action at Gemaizah (Medal with clasp; Bronze Star); action of Toski (Despatches; Clasp; created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 8 November 1889]: "Arthur Montagu McMurdo, Lieutenant, HLI. For services during action at Toski". Presented by the Sirdar at Haifa, 2 February 1891; was on Headquarters, Egyptian Army, 1894. He married Helen Estcourt, daughter of B Cotton, Alton, Isle of Wight. Became Director, Slavery Department, Cairo, 1898; retired from the Army 8 November 1900; Reserve of Officers. Major McMurdo was also Secretary of the Egyptian Agricultural Society. He died 15 April 1914. An obituary notice of McMurdo Pasha appeared in the ‘Times' of 16 April 1914.
